Stairway to Heaven: Spanish high rise

In the Spanish city of Benidorm, a beloved or decried tourist town, there stands a high rise building of 47 floors without elevators to take you up, reports Der Spiegel today.

The only favorable interpretation we could find was the architect's desire to transform the song Stairway to Heaven into a real life physical object. Or maybe make people walk to help fight the pretty much worldwide obesity epidemic.

But the paper reports a much more boring explanation. Apparently, the owners had 20 floors in mind and planned and then decided to add another 27.

At that point, at the latest, the architects must have blinked or everybody was too overwhelmed by the world financial crisis that started at the time and hit Spain extremely hard.

As it stands today, the building complex of twin towers joined at the top looks okay on the photos but remains unoccupied beyond the 20th floor due to the absence of elevators.

It appears, the owners lack the money and the young and hyper fit who could make the hike without incurring a medical emergency, are simply not interested.

TheEditor got unexpectedly upset at the story and howled: then why, oh why, do I get all bent out of shape when I spill a pound of stucco while working on the house?
